Schanzer duck race 2024
On Saturday 20 July, the time had come again: numerous squeaky ducks bravely plunged into the Danube and swam in a race for a good cause.
Our five sponsor ducks gave their all at the Schanzer Duck Race last Saturday. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to win this year. Unsere beste Ente belegte den 10. Platz von insgesamt 205 gesponserten Enten. But the most important thing for us is the sporting spirit that says “Taking part is everything!”.
The Schanzer Duck Race took place again this year as part of the Festival of Cultures in Klenzepark Ingolstadt. The race was organized by the Ingolstadt Lions Club for the ninth time. This time, 213 sponsor ducks and 3000 little yellow squeaky ducks set off to swim for the best places. This time, specially designed country ducks were also at the start. All the nations taking part in the Festival of Cultures decorated typical national ducks and chose their winner in a separate race.
Exciting race for a good cause
The sponsored duck race started at 5 p.m. at the Konrad Adenauer Bridge: The ducks entered the water from a boat and raced to the Danube stage. The THW ensured that all the ducks reached the finish line safely and that none got lost. The race results of the sponsored ducks can be read here.
Half an hour later, it was the turn of the 2698 mini squeaky ducklings. The ducklings slipped straight from the bridge into the Danube. At the finish line, they were fished out of the river and scanned directly so that the correct sequence could be traced. The main prize was a one-year use of a Family eBike Days from the Willner Bicycle Centre and many other great prizes, e.g. from the Donautherme Ingolstadt or the ERC Ingolstadt. This time, the majority of the proceeds from the participation fees and the sponsorship amounts went to the Herzenswunsch-Hospizmobil of the Ingolstadt District Association of the Bavarian Red Cross. The volunteers use the fully equipped Volkswagen T5 ambulance to fulfil a heartfelt wish for people in their final phase of life. This could be a visit to Lake Garda, to relatives or to a football match. It is usually no longer possible for those affected to fulfil their wishes themselves due to limited mobility, necessary medical care measures or limited financial resources. The project is financed by donations and the voluntary work of numerous BRK helpers. The fulfilment of the wish is completely free of charge for the patient.
Interesting facts about the duck race
Since 2013, the charity of the Lions Club ‘Auf der Schanz’ Ingolstadt has been organising the duck race, which is very popular with young and old alike. The proceeds are donated to regional aid organisations every year. In total, more than 85,000 euros have been raised so far. In addition, the same ducks are used for every race to avoid plastic waste.
Our ducks are now going on a well-deserved summer break and will then start training for the coming year straight away. We are already looking forward to it!
